Strategic Partnerships That Deliver: Building the Future of Industrial Services in Alberta

In the world of heavy industrial services, partnerships are everything.

From safety and scheduling to execution and efficiency, today’s projects require more than technical skill—they demand trust, collaboration, and alignment of values. That’s exactly what drives the partnership between Willow Lake Métis Group (WLMG) and Melloy Industrial Services, a relationship built on shared goals and strengthened by years of mutual respect.

As industry and Indigenous communities increasingly look to work together in meaningful ways, this alliance sets a new standard for what success can look like.

A Shared Commitment to Excellence

Melloy Industrial Services, a 100% employee-owned company and member of the PCL family, has been delivering trusted solutions for over 35 years. Their focus: supporting Western Canada’s resource economy through turnarounds, maintenance, capital projects, and pressure vessel fabrication.

But while Melloy brings deep technical expertise to the table, it’s their alignment with WLMG’s values—honesty, openness, and long-term community impact—that makes this partnership stand out.

The collaboration is more than contractual. It’s built on consistent communication, respect for Indigenous leadership, and a shared mission: to create industrial opportunities that also support economic reconciliation and community prosperity.

Why This Partnership Works

According to Melloy Vice President and General Manager Mitch Soetaert, what started as an early conversation has evolved into a trusted relationship grounded in real-world action.

“From day one,” Mitch explains, “Willow Lake has always been honest about who they are, what they’re building, and how we can support each other. That honesty matters.

In an industry often shaped by transactional agreements, the WLMG–Melloy partnership is refreshingly human. It’s about real people, real conversations, and real solutions; built on accountability, cultural respect, and a shared belief in building something that lasts.

And the results speak for themselves. From project planning to client introductions and workforce development, the collaboration is unlocking new opportunities for both organizations, while delivering measurable outcomes for the community and the broader industry.

Industrial Services with Community Impact

Together, WLMG and Melloy provide comprehensive industrial services that support Alberta’s infrastructure, petrochemical, and energy sectors.

These include:

  • Turnarounds

In fast-paced, time-critical environments, experience and efficiency are key. Melloy delivers turnarounds in 30–45 days, mobilizing peak workforces of up to 800 trades. With embedded planners and seasoned managers, their teams execute under pressure; safely, reliably, and on schedule.

  • Maintenance Programs

Melloy’s general maintenance crews ensure mechanical systems run effectively, helping clients minimize downtime and eliminate unplanned shutdowns. Their services extend the life of pressure systems and components, improving long-term operational integrity.

  • Pressure Vessel Fabrication

Backed by fabrication facilities in Nisku, Alberta, Melloy manufactures to ASME standards (Section VIII Div 1 & 2, S, U, U2 stamps), offering reliable solutions for pressure piping and vessels. This capacity enables clients to access localized, code-compliant fabrication support across the region.

  • Heat Exchanger Handling

From safe removal to repair and installation, Melloy’s proprietary hydraulic tools can manage exchanger bundles up to 85 metric tons. That means safe, efficient handling of high-value equipment, without compromising plant operations.

  • Machining and Field Services

With in-house machinists and mobile field crews, Melloy provides custom services like flange facing, milling, drilling, and pipe prep. Reducing downtime and offering responsive support wherever it’s needed.

This broad scope of work allows Melloy and WLMG to scale with clients while introducing Indigenous workforce opportunities across every service line. It’s a win-win that merges performance with purpose.

Bridging Industry and Indigenous Communities

WLMG’s role in the partnership is multi-dimensional. As a trusted Indigenous business, WLMG provides more than local access; they offer cultural guidance, workforce connection, and a deep understanding of the region’s communities and expectations.

Mitch Soetaert shares that this has changed the game for Melloy.

“WLMG has opened doors we couldn’t open on our own,” he says. “They’ve introduced us to decision-makers and influencers we hadn’t previously connected with, and those relationships are making a real difference in how we pursue work.”

This is what Indigenous partnerships should look like: not just boxes checked, but value unlocked. WLMG doesn’t just bring community connection; they bring strategic insight, industry knowledge, and a shared commitment to safety and success.

A Model of Trust and Transparency

When asked about the secret to the partnership’s strength, Mitch doesn’t hesitate: trust.

“It’s simple,” he says. “If something changes, Willow Lake tells us. Good or bad, they keep us in the loop. That’s what partnership is; working together through it all.”

This transparency has built a foundation where innovation and growth can thrive. Whether it’s navigating a major client RFP or preparing for a multi-year contract, both teams know they’re aligned, not just in deliverables, but in values.

Looking Ahead: A Future Built Together

The WLMG–Melloy partnership is still evolving, but the path forward is clear.

With new project bids underway and long-term contracts on the horizon, both organizations are positioned to grow together, scaling impact, advancing reconciliation, and strengthening Alberta’s industrial economy.

For Mitch and the Melloy team, it’s about more than work. It’s about building a future they believe in.

“You walk away from a Willow Lake gathering and you just feel good,” Mitch reflects. “It’s family, it’s community, it’s people who care about doing the right thing, and that’s exactly the kind of partner you want.”

More Than a Partnership

In a world where industrial success is often measured in metrics, the partnership between WLMG and Melloy reminds us that the most important outcomes are human.

Yes, they deliver on scope, safety, and standards. But more importantly, they deliver on trust, on purpose, and on community prosperity.

Together, they represent a new way of doing business in Alberta, where Indigenous partnerships are more than symbolic—they’re strategic, effective, and deeply valued.
